SPRING! Key info for whanau.
It's that time again! Starting to work towards our Spring Showcase for 2026. This is a collaboration between Ali Tylee's dance school “Depth of Motion”, “Throw Shapes” Dance School (thats us!), and the music students of Levity Beet.
The showcase takes place over two days at Pohara Hall and includes three performances.
IMPORTANT * if your child is unable to make some or all of the performances please let Milo know as soon as possible so we can make the best plan for everyone to feel happy during term time as well as during performances.
One week before the performances we'll hold our full dress rehearsal on Saturday, 19 September. Schedule to follow closer to the date. Dancers will rehearse on stage, practise entrances and exits, and work through costume changes. This is a dress rehearsal only, with no lighting or sound, so all costumes should be ready by this date.
All students are required for a tech/dress on Thursday the 24th of September at Pōhara Hall from 3:30pm till 6:30pm. Our older students may be asked to join earlier as their lighting and sound will be a little more complex. As always we will try to release our youngest performers as early as possible so they feel fresh for their shows on Friday and Saturday.
If your child is in Little Shapes, don't worry. As this is their first performance experience, they'll only perform in the Saturday matinee. We keep the lighting simple to avoid overwhelming them and to give them a gentle introduction to the excitement of performing on stage.
All other students will perform in all three shows:
1. Friday 25th September at 6:30 pm
2. Saturday 26th at 1:30 pm
3. Saturday 26th at 6:30 pm
These performances require a lot of effort from both our dancers and their families. We do our best to keep the workload manageable so the whole experience is enjoyable for everyone.
Soon, this page will be updated with a volunteer spreadsheet where families can choose jobs to help the event run smoothly. These include setting up chairs, helping clean the hall after performances, and providing baking for the fundraising stall. This includes packing in gear on the Thursday during the day and helping to PACK OUT by returning gear and cleaning the hall after the final show on Saturday.
Your child will also need a costume. Milo will discuss costume requirements with each class directly. Each group will need one or two parents to coordinate ordering and payments. We aim to keep costs as low as possible and avoid unnecessary waste, so wherever we can, costumes are chosen so they can be reused by your dancer or passed on to future students.

This year every class has also learned a song and dance from Matilda, meaning every class will perform two routines. It's an exciting addition, and the students are looking and sounding fantastic.
The costume for the Matilda performance is black pants and a plain white T-shirt, or a Throw Shapes Dance School T-shirt. These shirts will be available through DigiTees soon, and the purchase link will be added to this page as soon as it is available.
Every year we begin our show by singing a waiata together. This year we've chosen "Whakataka Te Hau," a well-known karakia that's easy to learn and beautiful to sing.
Our tamariki and rangatahi will perform the waiata on stage, with some singing the higher and lower harmonies. We invite everyone else to learn and sing the main melody with us.
Follow the link below to learn the waiata so you'll be ready to join in on the night. It's always great to add another waiata to your kete.
